Essential Reading for All Professionals
Negative/Positive: A Philosophy of Photography
Published in Paperback by WCB/McGraw-Hill (August, 1979)
Average review score:

worth the searchWhile this book is currently out of print, it deserves to be sought and is well worth the search. Focusing on the need for a life affirming, content driven photography, Bill Jay succinctly outlines and dispells the negative influences that effect the direction photographers might take and inspires/challenges thought about out how we might go about creating really moving/ thought provoking images: through a conscious approach to living and in turn seeing what is lived. I highly recommend this book to those whose interest in photography is deep and who are interested in changing the world. Ground breaking for youngish photographers and a much needed talisman for the more experienced at a time when what is most important is so seldomly discussed in academic circles.

Average review score:

An exceptional book! There are many books on the market which cover the world of saxophone and jazz. Now, finally a book that covers a lot of history of one of the giants of Rock & Roll Saxophone. A very well written book with many photos that all musicians can appreciate. A must for the sax player who wants to go back in time and take a trip to the roadhouses where the parties lasted all night and the band had everyone dancing in the streets!

This text truely lived up to the reputation that Dr. Uomoto has established for himself in this field. May we all wish for more to come from this brilliant and insightful author.

The New Pay : Linking Employee and Organizational Performance
Published in Paperback by Jossey-Bass (September, 1996)
Average review score:

A pioneering study on the new pay !!!As written by Schuster and Zingheim "understanding what pay and benefits can do to help organizations succeed is essential and best learned early in a career. Edward Lawler's Strategic Pay and this book were the first books to address pay outside of the context of traditional pay grounded in the 1940's, when challenges and opportunities were remarkably different from what are today."
Within the context of comparison between the new pay and traditional pay approaches Schuster and Zingheim discuss some crucial concepts such as :
* base pay (market-based pay/skill-based pay, job-based pay)
* variable pay (group performance, individual performance)
* indirect pay (obtained results, employee's tenure)
* job evaluation (external/market based equity, internal/point factor based equity)
I higly recommend this pioneering study to HR professionals.

Conger takes a slightly different approach to persuasion than most authors. In a sense, I would suggest he is talking about how professionals can build and exercise influence. Based on his observations of many professionals, Conger delivers essential advice such as "persuasion is not a one-shot effort" and "persuasion is not about who has the best technical arguments." Instead, Conger talks about the reasons why we allow ourselves to be influenced by others. In my own words, these reasons are relationships and credibility.
When delivering an executive session on influence, this article is always the first that I select. I....
My advice is to skip the more recent influence articles from HBR and read this article instead. .... In a short period of time, you will get solid advice about influencing others that will serve you well inside the office and out.
